What is Physical Therapy?

Skills for better movement

Physical Therapy (PT) emphasizes activities to facilitate gross motor development, basic mobility, and functional skills.

Areas of focus for the physical therapist include:

bulletGross motor skills - activities that use large muscles
bulletMobility skills - moving safely through one's environment
bulletPostural control and alignment
bulletJoint motion and flexibility
bulletManual therapy techniques
bulletBody awareness
bulletPositioning and adaptive equipment
bulletBalance
bulletCoordination
bulletSensory motor skills
bulletAdaptive skill development
bulletOrthotics training and fitting for lower extremities
bulletModalities such as electronic stimulation, heat, and ultrasound

There can be overlap between the different therapies because they are related and complementary services. The differences are in the techniques and activities used and the areas with which they are concerned.

Epicenter Therapy Services emphasizes the team approach to avoid duplication of therapies.
