What is Speech-Language Pathology?

Skills for effective communication

Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) emphasizes facilitation of both communication and oral motor skills that support swallowing.

Areas of focus for the speech-language pathologist include:

bulletArticulation disorders - producing and using speech sounds
bulletSpecific language impairment - understanding and the use of language
bulletLanguage delays
bulletWord retrieval issues
bulletOral motor training to support feeding, chewing, swallowing, and speaking
bulletDevelopment of play skills to support symbolic development
bulletNonverbal communication strategies
bulletCognitive function
bulletLanguage therapy for children with hearing loss and deafness, cleft palate, and autism

There can be overlap between the different therapies because they are related and complementary services. The differences are in the techniques and activities
used and the areas with which they are concerned.

Epicenter Therapy Services emphasizes the team approach to avoid duplication of therapies.
